I don’t know if you had it in mind, but this has the same feeling as the Eustace Clarence Scrubb dragon scene to me - the humanity of monstrosity, or vice versa, however you like it. Also, the Dore at the top is magnificent!
Not consciously, but that scene has profoundly affected me and is thus part of my subconscious encyclopedia of meaning so it has no doubt influenced the poem to some level.
